Ben is an emo and one of the "twins", the other being Bernie. He is part of the Waitrose crew and later the Holloway crew.
Appearance
Ben is described as appearing virtually identical to Bernie, despite the latter being a girl. He has straight black hair, and wears black combat trousers, black T-shirts, and black sweatshirts.[1]
Personality
Ben appears to be the more level-headed of the duo, as he would help keep Bernie out of trouble. He is not a fighter, and is very gentle and funny.
Ben had high hopes about what life could be like at Buckingham Palace, but those hopes soon deflated when he realized that David King only cared about conquering the kids outside the palace. He became homesick for the Waitrose and the things he and Bernie had built there, and decided to leave with the rest of the Holloway kids.
History
Before the disaster, Ben was into robotics and used to watch TV shows like Scrapheap Challenge. He was best friends with Bernie, and he often kept her from getting into fights.[2]
After the disaster, Ben and Bernie made it to the Waitrose and became part of the group there. In the early days, Ben and Bernie built a large, fortified gate to protect the Waitrose entrance, as well as other modifications such as the crow's nest and the speaking tubes. They were also in charge of opening and closing the gate.[1] They were bullied at first, but once they were able to show off their talents, they were quickly accepted by the group.[3]
Synopsis
The Enemy (2009)
Ben and Bernie open the doors to let Arran and his scavenging party inside, and are disheartened by the death of Deke. Later, they let in a boy named Jester, who tells them about a settlement running in Buckingham Palace. Both Ben and Bernie are not eager to leave the Waitrose, but they decide that they can always build new things wherever they end up.[4] He is not a fighter and stays with the little kids during the journey. When they arrive, they are greeted with a large feast courtesy of David King. Over the course of their stay in the palace, Ben and Bernie scavenge for things and try to present David some ideas for engineering projects, such as a water filtration system, a heating system, and a plan to generate electricity. However, David shows very little interest in their ideas, saying that it would make the Palace kids tougher if they had less amenities.[2]
Ben and Bernie are present when the Holloway crew discusses whether to fight the Squatters. He agrees with Freak's statement that every kid is one of their own, but is told to shut up by Achilleus, who calls him "emo".[3] He doesn't go to the fight between Achilleus and Just John, and instead spends the time tinkering with a gas generator with Bernie. He and Bernie have a late dinner in the dining room, where they contemplate their current situation and realize that David had set up the palace to cover basic survival, and had no interest in making things better for the kids inside. They are greeted by Achilleus coming into the dining room, and he asks them to come to the ballroom at 11:00 PM. Ben is hesitant, but Bernie agrees to go.[2] Ben and Bernie both leave the palace with the rest of the Holloway crew to go to the Natural History Museum.[5]
It is presumed that they made it, but neither of them are mentioned during The Fallen.
The End (2015)
Ben and Bernie team up with Shadowman to rig a volley of car bombs to attack The Fear during the final battle. They used the explosives inside of stadiums, based on the information Ed gave to Shadowman about the explosion in The Oval stadium.
Abilities
Skillset
- Engineering: Despite being a noncombatant, Ben is a capable mechanic. He helped to create a gate door barricade, an outdoor brazier made from a washing machine barrel, and speaking tubes inside of the Waitrose supermarket.
Relationships
Bernie
Bernie and Ben are very close to one another, sticking together through common interests and a lack of friends. They tend to follow each other everywhere, and Ben appears to be the one keeping Bernie out of trouble.
