Kwanele Nkosi is a supporting character in the Enemy series, first appearing in The Dead. A fashion-obsessed boy from Rowhurst, Kwanele was among the coach kids that made it to the Natural History Museum.
Appearance
"Kwanele Nkosi, tall, elegant, and somehow, despite everything, always immaculately dressed."
- — Kwanele's introduction, The Dead [1]
Kwanele is a young Zulu[2] boy; with dark skin, black hair, and brown eyes. He often dresses in tailored suits, kimonos, or other fancy clothes from the Victoria and Albert Museum. Even in the carnage of the disaster, he managed to stay immaculately dressed.[3]
Personality
Kwanele comes off as emotionally-distant or judgemental at times. His most notable trait is his obsession with fashion; he dresses almost exclusively in high-class clothing,[3] and judges peoples' personalities based on their fashion sense.[4] In fact, Kwanele is so well-versed in fashion and fashion-related topics that Chris Marker believed he had read every single fashion magazine and watched every single fashion program in the history of the world.[4]
During The Dead, Kwanele is very cowardly and non-combative, doing everything he can to stay out of any possible fight. Most notably, he tried to help Ed drag Piers off of the bus, but became too scared to stay behind and ran away. When confronted, Kwanele sheepishly avoids a fight and insists that even if they had gotten Pier off the bus, it wouldn't have made a difference.[5]
History
Kwanele was the son of a rich Zulu[2] family. He would boast that his haircuts cost fifty quid, and he always wore designer suits made by a tailor in London.[3] He attended Rowhurst School, and once performed as Othello in a class play. Jack reflected that he always turned it into a comedy, but that everyone considered him talented. He was the only black kid in his school.
Two weeks after the disaster began, the Rowhurst students became trapped within the school as more and more teachers began to turn into sickos. Kwanele hid in the School House dormitory with Jack, Ed Carter, Bam, Johnno, Piers, the Sullivan brothers, Wiki, Arthur, Chris Marker, six boys from Field House, Justin, and two other "nerds" from a physics class.[3] The boys were aided by the English teacher Mr. Hewitt, who was the last of the teachers to turn.[6] Jack mentions that Kwanele is likely the only one who remembers the last time he showered.[3]
