Matthew Palmer, also known as Mad Matt, is a major character in the Enemy series, first appearing in The Dead.
Appearance
To be added.
Personality
Little is known about Matt's personality before the events of The Dead. He was noted as not being very religious, but he was willing and eager to engage in the group prayers initiated by Archie Bishop.
After unintentionally giving himself carbon monoxide poisoning, Matt becomes a religious fanatic and never stops babbling about the word of God, although beforehand he wasn't the slightest bit religious. In his opinion, those who sin end up dead and those who live are true believers. He tells everybody not to mourn people who are dead as they were sinners. Everybody considers him mad, even Archie who was his closest friend during the disease. He is extremely obsessive with The Lamb and has a never-ending song being played in the cathedral. He also sacrifices kids to the monster Wormwood to appease him.
History
Matt attended Rowhurst with several of the other characters before the disaster. He was friends with Archie Bishop, though Matt himself was noted as not being very religious.
In the early days of the disaster, Matt was attacked by an infected lunch lady, who bit him on the butt before he escaped. Ten days before the first chapter of The Dead, Matt hid with Malik Hussein, Archie Bishop, and twelve other students in the school chapel. All the boys had to read were prayer books, and one night, Archie suggested that they all say a prayer. Matt started to get into the prayer, and he began reading from various sections of a Bible to keep up everyone's spirits. The church was very cold at night, and the students tried to start a fire by burning pages from prayer books and old Bibles -- but at Matt's insistence, they began to use charcoal instead. By the time the students realized they were unintentionally being poisoned, they were too late and began to die or fall unconscious from the fumes.[2]
Abilities
Unique Abilities
- Presumed Immunity: In the final battle in The End, the sickos avoid Matt and are scared to come near him. This coupled with the fact that Matt has remained partially sane after he was bitten by a sicko suggests that Matt could have a level of immunity to the disease.
Equipment
Current
- Whip: In The Sacrifice, Matt uses a whip to try and get The Kid's name. He later uses the whip to beat himself in The End.
- Agnus Dei Banner: Matt carries a homemade banner of The Lamb and The Goat in The Dead and The End.
Former
- British Army Revolver: In The Dead, Matt uses an old British Army Revolver.

Trivia
- Matt's nickname, "Mad Matt" is likely a reference to the titular protagonist of Mad Max, former police officer Max Rockatansky. Mad Max takes place in a future Australia which is experiencing societal collapse due to war and critical resource shortages and ecocide, and Rocatansky's family is killed by barbarians. After their deaths, Roctansky finds himself helping pockets of civilisation -- initially for his own self-interest, but his motives always drift into more altruistic ones.
