Ollie is a major character in The Enemy series, first appearing in The Enemy. He is a skirmisher from the Holloway crew.

Appearance

Ollie is a small fourteen year-old boy with red hair.

As of the end of The Enemy, Ollie is fifteen years old.

Personality

"The last in the group was Ollie. Small and red-haired, the cleverest of them all. He had sharp eyes and could think quickly. He kept himself to himself and most of the time he kept quiet. But, when he did speak, people listened."
Ollie's introduction, The Enemy (2009)[1]

Ollie is described as being sharp, quick-witted and is generally the brains of the Waitrose group. Arran Harper often went to Ollie for leadership advice, but this was not seen as a weakness by any of the kids as it was common knowledge that Ollie always knew what to do in a situation.[2] He is quiet and distant, preferring not to speak often and keeping to himself, even in battle.

Ollie remembers the disaster as beginning all at once, believing that the world never really had time to panic and was in a state of shock from all that was happening. By the time his younger brother Luke died, Ollie had pushed the losses of his family out of his mind to focus on keeping alive.[3]

History

Before the disaster, Ollie lived with his parents and his three brothers, seventeen year-old Dan, fifteen year-old Will, and his younger brother Luke. Whenever the family went on car rides, Ollie would stare out the window and try to keep out of the arguments and fights. He liked going on rides alone with his father, as he felt like they were equals in personality and he enjoyed having his father to himself.[3]

When the disaster first struck, Ollie's father was one of the first people in the United Kingdom to die from the disease. Ollie's mother became frantic after his death and began packing up the house so they could travel to the countryside to live with Ollie's Auntie Susan. However, she became sick and died before they were able to get out of London, and the kids tried to get out of London on their own only for Dan and Will to die soon after. Only Ollie and Luke were left by the time the disaster was in full swing, as they were both too young to get the disease. Luke was later killed during a riot in Finsbury Park, and Ollie decided that as the last member of his family, he owed it to them to stay alive.[3]

Some time later, Ollie made it to the Waitrose in Holloway and became part of the group there. Though he was not elected the leader of the group, Arran and other kids often went to Ollie for advice, as he was considered the smartest kid in the group.[2]

Equipment

Current

  • Slingshot: Ollie's weapon of choice is a slingshot with metal balls.
    • Steel Balls: Ollie's preferred ammo were steel balls that he had collected over the course of the disaster. He preferred to take his targets out in one shot, as he wasn't able to find a lot of things to replace the balls.
  • Watch: Ollie wore a watch in The Enemy, which he used to check the time as the Holloway crew was leaving Buckingham Palace.[4]
