Sam Brewer,[1] better known by his nickname "Small Sam", is a protagonist figure in the Enemy series, first appearing in The Enemy. A member of the Waitrose crew who managed to escape being abducted by sickos, Sam made it his personal mission to find the rest of his group and reunite with his younger sister, Ella.

Appearance

Sam is a small nine year-old boy with fair hair, white skin, and freckles. He often wears light-colored clothes, and was nicknamed "Small Sam" due to being small for his age

Personality

Sam is described by Ed as a very brave, very lucky person. He is also very loyal, as shown by when he risked his own life to try and save The Kid and try to see his sister. Sam is also very trusting, wanting to believe that Nick and Rachel had good intentions despite them being adults, and wanting to believe that Matt Palmer could really help him get back to Ella.

Sam is a very imaginative boy and has a deep love for medieval fantasy. He noted he loves the Middle Ages, knights, and the Lord of the Rings series. He frequently imagines himself as a knight to help him be brave in perilous situations, likening himself to Samwise Gamgee and giving himself the nickname "Sam the Giant Slayer".[2]

History

Sam lived with in Holloway, London, with his parents and his younger sister Ella. On Friday or Saturday nights, the family would get pizza and watch TV shows, such as Star Trek and Heroes. His mother didn't let him use Facebook or MySpace, but he was allowed to use MSN.[3] His father once took him to the Arsenal football stadium, and while Sam was initially scared of all the noisy people, he soon got into the game and began to cheer as well.[2]

Sam had a deep love for fantasy, and was obsessed with knights. He loved to play World of Warcraft and had a level sixty-two gnome named Shortybottom, a Night Elf Warrior called Deathblooood (with four o's), and a Tauran shaman named Dorkcrawler. While he loved the game, he was getting bored of it and really wanted to play Grand Theft Auto, but his mother said no.[3] Whenever Sam wanted to play knights, Ella tried to play as the princess -- but after seeing that he brother wanted other knights to play with, she tried to play as a knight instead. However, she would always end up getting hurt and crying.[4] Before his father got sick, he would read Sam The Lord of the Rings before bed -- although Sam thought it was too old for him and he liked the movies better.[2]

One night after the disaster began, Sam's mother woke him up and hugged him. Sam vividly remembers seeing her face covered with boils, and her teeth chattering so much that he could hear the sound they were making. His mother told Sam him that she and his father would be going away for a while, and asked him to protect Ella in their stead. After saying goodbye to the children, Sam's parents left the house, and he never saw them again.[2]

Some time later, Sam and Ella made it to the Waitrose supermarket and became part of the group there. Because there were three other Sams already in the group, Sam was nicknamed "Small Sam" so as to distinguish him from the others.[5] To cope with the loss of his parents, Sam began to imagine that they were living on a desert island and planning to rescue him and Ella someday.[2]
