The following is an estimated timeline of the entire Enemy series. Not all canon events are included in the timeline, save for important points in the storyline.
Possible Timescale
The order of the series is generally The Dead, The Fear, The Enemy, The Fallen, The Sacrifice, The Hunted, and The End, with several of the books overlapping in events. Despite some minor inconsistencies, there are several events that help put together an accurate timeline:
- Because The Enemy is published in 2009, so it can be estimated that the book itself takes place in 2009. The events of The Dead take place just over a year before the events of The Enemy, which would place the beginning of the outbreak in 2008.
- The Promithios expedition to South America take place fifteen to sixteen years prior to the active emergence of the disease, placing its initial discovery in 1992. The Twisted Kids would be born roughly nine to ten months later.
- DogNut sets out for the Natural History Museum in spring, presumably late March or early April based on the weather, which was described with the mornings being described as "frosty".
- The Natural History Museum kids celebrate World Book Day in the beginning of The Fallen, which is celebrated April 23rd, putting it roughly in an accurate timeline. Therefore, it can be assumed that the first case of the disease started sometime February or March, 2008 in London, England.
- The Fallen takes place twenty-eight seconds after The Enemy and the same time as The Sacrifice.
Inconsistencies in The Hunted
It should be noted that The Hunted has several inconsistencies in its timeline of events. For example, claim that Malik's story goes back nineteen (19) days to the day Ed leaves the Tower of London doesn't make sense -- as Ed's group is in the countryside for less than nineteen days. It would appear that Higson's attempts to work Malik in seem to throw the timeline out of balance.
Pre-series timeline
Ancient history
- The Inmathger tribe makes contact with the disease in South America.
1600s
- Rowhurst School is founded in the early 1600s.
1800s
- Rowhurst School undergoes major redevelopment in the mid-1800s.
1900s
1992
- Scientists from Promithios Biomedical make contact with the Inmathger tribe and are unknowingly infected with the disease. They then unknowingly bring the disease back to the mainland, where it begins to spread and infect the rest of the human population.
1992-1993
- The Twisted Kids are born. The disease bends the minds of the infected scientists to cover up their births, and the kids are hidden away in a Promithios warehouse.
- For an unknown reason, the disease goes dormant for the next fourteen years.
2000s
2008
- February-March:
- The first reported outbreak of the disease begins in the East End of London, near the northeast Borough of Hackney. The media presumes this to be a simple cold or flu, comparing it to the bubonic plague.[1]
- The CDC, Promithios Biomedical, and other health organizations recognize the disease before most, if not all, of their researchers are infected.
- The "Scared Kid" video is posted on YouTube.[2]
- Greg and Liam Thorne are invited to Paul MacLaren's farm in Maidstone to wait out the outbreak.[3]
- March-April:
- The Scared Kid video is removed from YouTube a month after its initial upload. The next day, the YouTube site goes down, and the day after that the internet goes down.[2] Seaports and airports closed, the internet is taken down, and schools are closed. Meanwhile, the British government arranges for special transport from other countries to get British citizens back to the Isles.[4]
- The United Nations, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Co-Operation Organization, and multiple militaries attempt to quarantine infection hot-spots, before being presumably destroyed by rival groups or the infected. A large number of sickos patrol the streets in daylight while Riot Police, S.W.A.T., National Guard, and Special Forces fight back. Most organizations and militaries around the world are either destroyed or compromised.
- Paul MacLaren and his older sons succumb to the disease and are killed by Greg Thorne. Paul's youngest son goes catatonic, and Greg kills him and makes him into dried meat. He and Liam then leave the farm.[3]
- Jordan Hordern and twenty-two other survivors attempt a siege on the Imperial War Museum. Five of Jordan's crew dies trying to take the museum, another dies from an infected wound, two more crew members turn, and four leave the museum to try their luck elsewhere.
- The students of Rowhurst School are effectively quarantined in the school. Nineteen boys are holed up in School House dormitory.[5] Ten days before the first chapter of The Dead, Matthew Palmer and fourteen other boys hole up in the school chapel.[6]
Events of the series

- The School House boys leave the dormitory, during which Jack and Ed rescue Frédérique Morel from infected teachers. The dormitory boys rescue the chapel boys, though some of them have died from the carbon monoxide.[6]
- The Rowhurst kids leave the school and part down the middle -- the dormitory boys head for the countryside while the chapel kids head for London. On their way to the countryside, the dormitory boys are attacked at the Fez. They are rescued by Greg Thorne in the coach bus, and Greg later picks up Matt Palmer and the chapel kids. That night, Greg strangles Liam in his sleep.[8]

In the ensuing fight, Greg succumbs to the infection and crashes the bus.[9] The kids manage to escape the bus and make it to the Imperial War Museum, where they meet Jordan Hordern and DogNut. - Day 5 of The Dead:

- The kids leave the museum because of the incoming fires, and are attacked at Lambeth Bridge by the sickos, They manage to escape the sickos via a tourism boat, but Matt fights about their destination and crashes the boat. The boat goes down, killing several kids and splitting the groups off.
- Ed and Jordan make it to the Tower of London, where Jordan dethrones Tower leader Tomoki Ford. He does not throw Tomoki's crew out, but rather lets them stay as their own group.
- The infected Greg Thorne finds a vest with Saint George on it at a destroyed tourist stand. He dons the vest and renames himself "Saint George".
2008-2009
- David King takes over Buckingham Palace from Rose and Jester's group, Brooke and Justin take over Robbie's group at the Natural History Museum, and Matt claims St. Paul's Cathedral.
- In Holloway, a group of kids make their home in a Waitrose supermarket and elect two kids -- Arran Harper and Maxie -- as their leader and second-in-command. Another group of kids make their home in a Morrisons supermarket, and a boy named Blue establishes himself as their leader.
- Chris Marker, a former student of Rowhurst, begins to write an account of what has happened since the infection. He titles this epic The Chronicles of Survival.
- Matthew's acolytes find an infected adult covered in what appears to be green mould. Despite being infected, he appears to be somewhat sentient. They lock him up in the warehouse near their base and sacrifice children to him.
- A group of kids known as The Squatters make their home in St. James's Park, with a boy named Just John as their leader. They become enemies of David King, who wants to expand his rule into St. James's Park.
